Philips Releases HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator;
new AED for minimally-trained lay responders

Philips Electronics (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHI) today announced availability of its HeartStart OnSite automated external defibrillator (AED). With features such as CPR coaching & an intuitive operator interface, the HeartStart OnSite is specially designed to aid lay responders in using a defibrillator successfully to help save a life. The HeartStart OnSite is the result of extensive research on ease of use, and is the first AED to employ technology that senses operator behavior and adapts its voice instructions appropriately according to the user's actions.

Defibrillators provide treatment for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming a quarter million lives each year. Today, fewer than five percent of sudden cardiac arrest victims survive, largely because defibrillators do not reach them in time. For each minute that passes before defibrillation therapy reaches a victim, the chance for survival decreases by about 10 percent. After 10 minutes, few attempts at resuscitation are successful.

The Philips HeartSmart OnSite Defibrillator offers exceptional ease of use for the minimally trained lay responder, a growing class of defibrillator users found in communities, schools & businesses. Built-in, first-of-its-kind SMART Pad technology senses a responder's actions & automatically adjusts the pace of the voice instructions to match the individual responders's needs. Clear, calm voice commands-more comprehensive than those offered by existing AED's-guide the responder through every step of the defibrillation process, even reminding them to call for emergency help. Patented voice coaching for adult & infant/child CPR provides instructions & audio cues for each breath as well as the appropriate number, rate & depth of chest compressions. In addition, the HeartStart OnSite defibrillator can be used on infants & children under eight years old or weighing less than 55 pounds when equipped with specially designed infant/child pads which reduce the amount of energy delivered by the defibrillator to an appropriate level. Philips is the only manufacturer to provide this important capability.

"A defibrillator's ease of use is paramount for people who don't use a defibrillator as part of their job," said Dr. Mark Eckstein, Medical Director, Los Angeles Fire Department. "As defibrillators increasingly become commonplace in public places, a greater number of people may someday find themselves in a crisis situation where they can help save a life. Continued advances in the defibrillator interface will help ensure that this growing group of responders is best equipped to use a defibrillator successfully."

The underlying defibrillation technology of the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator is based on the more than 100,000 Philips AEDs found on airlines & in airports, workplaces & communities across the globe. A recent study conducted by Frost and Sullivan determined that Philips defibrillators are the most widely used in corporate & public access settings & that Philips is the world & U.S. market share leader in automated external defibrillators.

The HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator complements Philips' family of defibrillators-the HeartStart XL & XLT, HeartStart FR2+ & HeartStart Home-each of which is tailored to support the needs of a particular class of responders. For Hospital & pre-hospital emergency medical responders, the HeartStart XL & XLT defibrillator/monitors provide advanced functionality & features for ACLS-and BLS-trained clinicians. The HeartStart FR2+ defibrillator is optimized for designated first responders such as flight attendants, security guards & police officers, who participate in regular training drills & whose responsibilities include responding to medical emergencies. Recently, Philips introduced the HeartStart Home Defibrillator, the first of a new generation of defibrillators designed specifically for the home.

"Philips is committed to helping the broadest group of responders use technology successfully to help save a life," said Deborah Diasanzo, Vice president & general manager for cardiac resuscitation at Philips Medical Systems. "We designed the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator to ensure that the largest group of communities, businesses & schools to deploy defibrillators as part of the national effort to reduce the time it takes to deliver potentially lifesaving therapy to victims."

With the release of the HeartStart OnSite Defibrillator, Philips will also offer a compatible data management solution, HeartStart Event Review, which provides an easy-to-use solution for electronically reporting & managing defibrillation data. Event Review provides reliable presentation of ECG data, shock decision, audio(if available), & other event information to meet users' needs. Event Review is an important component of a successful defibrillation program because it enables medical directors & emergency medical personnel to analyze & manipulate the data from the defibrillator for the purposes of case review, response analysis, data trending, or emergency program evaluation.
